Haines Alaska

Our stay in Haines was lovely. We camped on the waterfront with spectacular views ( at least until a cruise ship docked and disgorged several thousand cruisers… some of whom felt our campsite would be a nice place to sit for the day 🤔). Otherwise, we found the locals to be friendly and the other travelers interesting.

We cycled along the coast, ate awesome halibut and chips, and wandered around town.

On my first day of cycling I rode up to Chilkoot Lake. The river had abundant Sockeye salmon leaping into the air as they moved upstream. A wier across the river was a great place to watch them in their epic journey and also was a favorite spot for local bears to feed.

Rainy today so we elected to drive rather than cycle as we head into Canada 🇨🇦. We spotted bald eagle and Trumpeter swans along the way. We’re camping at Million Dollar Falls in the Yukon tonight and hope to get on our bikes tomorrow. The campground is nearly empty. I heard from some other campers that they had not been able to travel on the Yukon Highway due to the forest fires. Who knows what we’ll find as we move inland? A big storm is predicted for the Bay of Alaska and is supposed to hit this region in a day. We may find ourselves caught between an ocean gale near the coast and smoke/ fires inland. Yikes! What is the world coming to?

But for tonight, we are cozy in our Truck, rain pattering on the roof. Tomorrow is another day.

All the best, Barb

  1. It must be my lucky day! Two of your blogs came through today! I see a lot of the Alaska state flower in your photos!
I figured out that 1070 meters is about 3500 ft in elevation. I hiked to the top of the continental divide today and I was at 13,010 feet…..kind of crazy how we were both above timberline but at such different latitudes! Keep your stories coming. Miss you!
