How many words do you know for rain???

We hit unbelievable rain as we started down the Carretera Austral. I knew that this region was infamous for challenging weather, but even the locals say this has been unusual. So as I ride along in the rain I think of the many descriptors of rain (and we have experienced all of them!!). We had about 48 hrs when it never stopped. Certainly a ride to remember.

Kenny, a fellow rider passing us

Deluge, downpour, raining cats and dogs, raining buckets, drizzling, sprinkling, spitting, misting, drenching, steady, unrelenting, showers, cloudbursts, flood…I am sure that there are more. Feel free to send me your suggestions.

Sadly this weather has hidden many of the views behind clouds and made riding and camping far more difficult. But everyone works hard at coping and making the best of things. And bit by bit the amazing views are appearing from behind the clouds and the sun is peeping through.

One consequence of the rain is that water seeped into my phone and shorted out my camera. Fortunately others have been sharing their photos since I haven’t been able to take any for several days.

The forecast for tomorrow is….rain! But then it hopefully will dissipate as we head further south. On we go…

  1. Barb you are amazing and so strong or perhaps stubborn? You have seen wonderful sights that people would pay lots of money to see. Memories to store away when you are old, if that should slow you down! Courage, as the French say. And lots of hugs from sunny Seattle

  2. Great post as usual and stunning photographs. The scenery reminds me so much of New Zealand south island with the mountains, waterfalls, giant ferns and temperate rain forest. And the lupins – the NZ roads are lined with lupins just like that. But it is considerably wilder where you are. Interesting you should mention 48 hours of rain – we have just had 2 days of continuous rain here too and more before that. Lots of flooding and disruption. At least I don’t have to go out in it, let alone try to cycle in it. The Scots and Irish Gaels also have lots of words for rain, but I think your selection covers it very nicely! Keep dry.

  3. I am sorry that your camera got wet. That is a bummer. Keep on trucking. The rain will have to stop eventually.
