Leaving Wyoming

Close Encounters…don’t they know about social distancing?
For those of you too young for the reference, Devil’s Tower (it is magnificent) was featured in an 80’s movie.

Today we leave Wyoming and arrive in the Black Hills of South Dakota where I lived many years ago. Our trek across Wyoming has been full on contrasts from the relative crowds in Yellowstone to desolate country roads.

Traffic is several deer running across the road
That’s what I call excellent support…handing off a coffee roadside!

We have passed through small towns

Bigger than some!

and stayed in little towns with big hearts and great camping facilities like Greybull and Hulett

The only area that was fairly dystopic was outside of Gillette. Coal mines, hundreds of idle locomotive engines stretching as far as you can see, and a Confederate flag across the road.

๐ŸŽถ”Oh Daddy won’t you take me down to Mulenberg countydown by the Green River where paradise lays? I’m sorry my son, but you’re too late in asking. Mr Peabody’s coal train done hauled it away”๐ŸŽถ

Here are a few examples of the signage and art that capture this region so well:

I especially love the ranch signs

And finally, an alley sign that we saw while walking the dogs. Not saying that Jim was being a bit grumpy that day ๐Ÿ˜

See you from South Dakota! Bye for now!

  1. Great photos and narrative to go along. Having traveled to Florida by trailer and back, I couldn’t wait to see the wide open spaces, mountains and clear running rivers of the west. Thanks for letting us ride along. Flora
