More on the critters

Beware!

Australia is home to many animals not found anywhere else. Famously it is home to 21 of the 25 most toxic snakes in the world.

Fortunately, I have seen only one live snake on the road (but quite a few dead ones)

There are also other iconic animals that are fun to see. Many of the photos that I am including come from fellow riders who are far more accomplished photographers than myself or from the internet if none of us have been able to capture a photo thus far.

Of course the kangaroo is probably the Australian animal that most of us think of first.

Not a road sign we see at home
Peaking out (By Helen)

A group of kangaroos is called a mob. I counted ten here

I also saw wild emu on this ride. A magnificent bird

On our climb out of Adelaide, others in the group spotted a koala in the tree. I guess I rode right under him since my head was down slogging up the climb

Maybe he’s laughing at me down below

I am really hopeful that I will see a wombat. They are a marsupial with a backward facing pouch. Fiona led some of us on a walk last night searching for a wombat but I only saw wombat scat, recognizable because it is cubical.

Oh wombat, where are you?

We’ve also seen spectacular birds. Very large pelicans, galah, and cockatoos.

Cockatoos. I have seen them mainly flying in flocks

I look forward to learning more about the remarkable fauna of this country and hope you enjoyed this zoological tour. Hopefully there will be more to come.

Thanks for joining me. See you on our next rest day 👋
